Originally from the South Side of Chicago, I've experienced my fair share of harsh winters. If you've never had to experience the blustery winds or bone chilling cold that accompany Chicago winters, consider yourself lucky. Don’t get me wrong, I love my city but like many, I found it more difficult to maintain healthy hair in the winter. For years I had been wearing a satin bonnet under my hats to help retain moisture and prevent breakage, almost mirroring my nighttime routine of using satin to protect my hair from cotton pillowcases. While I was ok with this method, I couldn't help but wonder if there was a better solution. At the time, I was working in marketing at a multicultural hair care company, so to say I spent a significant part of my days thinking about hair would be an understatement. One day, as I walked into the office, the idea of satin lined hats hit me. A move to New York City, a master’s degree and a few career moves later, the West Fourth brand was finally born.
